The War of Roses was between the 2 rival families Lancaster and York.

Interestingly enough, both families came from the House of Plantagenet. If you go to the Wikipedia article on the War of Roses, there is a family tree near the end that shows all the connections between them.

Why did the battle of the roses happen?

I think you are referring to the "War of the Roses" fought for the throne of England between 1455 and 1485. The was was 30 years long. It started when Henry VI went insane and the Yorks had a claim to the throne, so instead of having a mad king on the throne. They thought we can take the throne and that's what they tried to do!
