West. The trip from Chicago, Illinois to Sacramento, California would be in a westerly direction. Chicago is in the north central part of the US, and Sacramento, the Capital of California, is in the central valley in California. California is the state that is farthest west in the US (excluding Alaska and Hawaii).
The Southwest part of the US is usually considered to be Arizona, parts of Texas, etc- in the South-western part of the country. Hawaii is off the continental US, so it is not considered SW. If you are referring to it's location on the world map, it is located roughly off the South Western coast.
