God said people were to subdue the earth, and to have dominion, [rulership] over it:-
Gen 1:27-28 KJV So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. [v. 28] And God blessed them, andGod said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it [ie the earth]: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
These two things are actually one, and could be called 'stewardship'. Mankind's stewardship of the earth has mainly been bad: greedy, grasping, avaricious, and selfish. However, Christ [note: Christ is one of the Godhead] also said good stewards would be rewarded and rule over everything, while bad stewards would be punished:-
Luk 12:42-47 KJV And the Lord said, Who then is thatfaithful and wise steward,whom his lord shall make ruler over his household, to give them their portion of meat in due season? [v. 43] Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing.[v. 44] Of a truth I say unto you, that he will make himruler over all that he hath. [v. 45] But and if that servant say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; and shall begin to beat the menservants and maidens, and to eat and drink, and to be drunken; [v. 46] The lord of that servant will come in a day when he looketh not for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in sunder, and will appoint him his portion with the unbelievers. [v. 47] And that servant, which knew his lord's will, and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes.
So, taking the household in this parable as the earth, and subduing and dominion as stewardship, the two ways that God said people were to be 'rulers over the other creatures' [ie steward] were to be '(1).faithful and (2). wise.
