Sedimentary rocks are the type in which fossils are most commonly found. This is because they are formed from layers of sediment, which can entomb and preserve the remains of plants and animals over time. Examples of sedimentary rocks where fossils can be found include limestone, sandstone, and shale.
Metamorphic rocks do not typically contain fossils, as the intense heat and pressure involved in their formation often destroy any remnants of organic matter. Igneous rocks are formed from molten material and do not contain fossils. Sedimentary rocks, which form from the accumulation and compression of sediments, are the type of rock that commonly contain fossils.

If the rock type around your home is primarily metamorphic, you are unlikely to find many fossils. Metamorphic rocks form under high pressure and temperature, which typically destroys any fossils that might have been present in the original sedimentary rock. Fossils are more commonly found in sedimentary rocks, where the conditions are conducive to preserving organic remains. Therefore, the chances of finding fossils in metamorphic rocks are minimal.

In a variety of rocks, mostly sedimentary (rocks formed by sand and other material deposited by water or other forms of erosion) but fossils have been found in metamorphic rocks (rocks altered by intense heat or pressure) and even igneous rocks (rocks formed by the cooling of lava or magma), though fossils found in in the latter type of rock are only "mold" type fossils (the lava or magma would have destroyed whatever organic matter was originally in the fossil; another material later could leak into the mold and solidify, creating a rock in the exact shape of whatever had been entombed and destroyed by the lava).
