As the Earth was solidifying it was struck by another planet. The results were that Earth had to settle out again and the moon was born of that collision. The moon is a good chunk of the Earth.

Shortly after the formation of the earth, an object roughly the size of mars struck earth a glancing blow scooping out a lot of crust and mantle rock. This material and the object became the moon. The fact that the moon's composition is similar to Earth - including the isotope mix - is part of the evidence cited for this crash theory.
