It depends on how you count it. It was the thirteenth colony of the original thirteen (1733), and was the 4th to be admitted to the Union officially, but then during the civil war it said it wasn't part of the United States anymore, and joined the Confederacy. It was the last state to re-join the union in 1870... and by that time, there were many more.
