Adult suffrage, or the right of adults to vote, was introduced at different times in various countries. In the United States, the 15th Amendment, ratified in 1870, prohibited denying the right to vote based on race, although women and many minorities still faced barriers. New Zealand was the first self-governing country to grant women the right to vote in 1893. The movement for universal adult suffrage continued to evolve throughout the 20th century, culminating in widespread voting rights for all adults in many nations.
