Moving pictures were first created in the 1880's. The earliest films were recorded experiments and local historical events or home movies. Various versions of the technology to create moving pictures were being worked on around the world by many teams in this time period.
By the 1890's small studios had begun creating films purely for entertainment and the earliest stages of modern movie making had begun with theaters slowly spreading across the US and parts of Europe.
These early films were generally less than an hour long and often designed to be filmed and released as serials, weekly. The production time and film making turn around were closer to modern television scheduling (30 to 60 minute shows released weekly)
By the 1920's studios had also begun experimenting with stand alone films (rather than serials), longer production times (months or years) and far more complex film making techniques. The first 'big budget' film is considered Ben Hur (1925). While the technology has continued to improve, the basic ideas of large production film making developed from this era and continue to be in use today. The older serial style of production developed into what is now used for modern television series.
