Ross was born in Philadelphia to a Quaker family. When she married her first husband she married outside of the religion, so was exiled from her church and family. John Ross was killed by a gunpowder explosion at the start of the revolution . A year later she remarries and he second husband dies after he is captured by the British and jailed. In 1783 she marries for the third time. In 1834 she died at the age of 84. The story about the first flag made by her is just that, a story. There is no creditable proof of the story. Credit for the first flag is given to Francis Hopkins. He made the first flag in 1776 for the navy and Congress has recognized this as the first flag.
