Mammoth Cave was used between 2000 and 4000 years ago by Native Americans. However, the first European discovery of Mammoth Cave is believed to have been in 1797, by Robert Houchins, who was apparently pursuing an injured bear he was hunting.
Parts of the cave were known to the locals traceably back toaround 3000BC, but commercial development for tourismwas started in the mid-19C by Dr. Jim Croghan.
