Australia's worst rail disaster to date occurred in the Sydney suburb of Granville in January 1977. 83 people were killed and 213 injured when a crowded commuter train travelling from the Blue Mountains left the railway tracks and hit a row of supports of the overhead concrete and steel road bridge at Bold Street, bringing down the bridge (and vehicles) onto several carriages.
