Who was the first national hero in Philippines?

The first national hero of the Philippines is Dr. José Rizal. He was a prominent nationalist, writer, and reformist whose works, particularly "Noli Me Tangere" and "El Filibusterismo," inspired the Philippine Revolution against Spanish colonial rule. Rizal's advocacy for social reforms and his ultimate execution in 1896 solidified his status as a symbol of Filipino nationalism and patriotism. His legacy continues to influence the country's identity and struggles for independence.

How did Rizal become a hero?

The Filipinos chose Rizal as their national hero. In fact, the revolutionary President of the First Philippine Republic, Emilio Aguinaldo first designated Rizal as a national hero. Rizal advocated independence by seeking reforms from the Spaniards through peaceful means. His literary works like Noli Me Tangere (Touch Me Not) and El Filibusterismo (The Subversive) awakened the Filipinos that reforms should be made to stop the abuses of the Spaniards towards them. Rizal is the Filipinos' martyr for independence and freedom and he richly deserved to be a hero.

Spanish knight who fought the moors in 1094 AD?

Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar, known as El Cid, was a Castilian military leader in medieval Spain. He served under Ferdinand the Great's son, Sancho and rose to become Bearer of the Royal Standard and Commander upon his ascension to the throne. He led successful military campaigns against Sancho's brothers as well as the Muslims in Andalusia. Unfortunately, when Sancho died without issue, his brother was the only heir and due to his previous battles against him, El Cid fell out of favor and lived the rest of his life in exile.
