It is in the GOSPEL OF MATTHEW that Jews supposedly accept responsibility for the Death of Christ. Jews have rejected that this line is based in truth and it has been effectivly struck down by the Papacy in the 20th century.

The specific line is Matthew 27:25, which says, (translation NIV):All the people answered, “His blood is on us and on our children!”

Where does the death of Jesus fit within the bigger picture of the bible story?

Jesus IS the bigger picture of the Bible story. Jesus is the predicted Messiah from the Old Testament and the One spoken about in the New Testament. When you read the complete bible you will realize that Jesus the Christ is the main subject in the bible. He is the Big picture. His death on the cross of Calvary completed God's plan for mankind. Now all mankind has to do is accept Jesus Christ as Savior to be reconciled back to God. If a person does not accept Jesus as Savior they have spit in the face of God and will pay a heavy price for eternity.

Who pronounce Jesus sentence?

In Matthew chapter 27 (King James Version) begins the trial of Jesus. Although Pilate tried to absolve himself of responsibility (Pilate's wife tried to warn him) he agreed to the death of Jesus as a way to satisfy the Jews. Pilate was the Roman govenorof that area of Israel and didn't want any trouble from the people. It is interesting to note that although Pilate sentenced Christ Jesus to death, to show he didn't want any responsibility for the action he washed his hands in clean water from a bowl. That is where we get our expression "to wash our hands of (something)" whenwe don't want to absolve ourselves of responsibility.

If Jesus died for your sins was his death in vain?

Jesus died so we would not have to. The wages of sin is death and we all have sinned. Jesus is the only one who never sinned so He was the only one who could take our place. This is the gift of salvation. There are millions who have accepted His gift of salvation, so in one sense, His death is not in vain. However, He cares for and loves YOU. If you do not accept His gift, then you are throwing His gift in His face.
