Until 1970, the New York City Marathon was run in Central Park. The race originally took place on the park's roads, featuring a loop course that highlighted various scenic spots within the park itself. It wasn't until 1976 that the marathon expanded to include a course through all five boroughs of New York City.
Held in 1970, the first New York City Marathon was won by Gary Muhrcke in 2:31:38. Organized by the New York Road Runners Club president Vince Chiappetta and Fred Lebow, it had 127 competitors running several loops around the Park Drive of Central Park. According to wikipedia, only about one-hundred spectators watched the race.
The New York City Marathon starts on Staten Island, at the beginning of Staten Island side of the Verazzano Bridge, not far past the toll booths. The first two miles are run entirely on the bridge. See www.nycmarathon.org.
