By fossilisation and permineralisation.
Fossilisation is caused by layers upon layers of sediment burying the bones. As the layers of sediment above the buried bones increases, so does the pressure on the layers of sediment lower down. The pressure becomes so great that the bones and the sedimentary rock fuse.
Permineralisation occurs when mineral rich water trickles in through the sedimentary rock reaching the dinosaur bones. The minerals fill in the cracks and spaces within the bone. Sometimes the calcium in the bones may be replaced with these minerals. The new minerals in the bone make them even harder and more likely to be preserved.
1: Replacement with minerals (petrification)
2: Formation of a cast or mold
by not decomposing and becoming a rock
Trace Fossils, and Carbonaceous Films
Either by melting or by deposition.
Index fossils are the fossils of short-lived species which, because of their short lives, can be used by scientists to identify the age of the rock strata in which they're found. (For example, if you know a certain species only lived in the Cambrian period, and you find some fossils of this species in some rock, then you know the other fossils you find in that rock must also have come from the Cambrian period.) Some examples of species that left behind index fossils, and their related historical periods, are:Billingsella corrugagta - Cambrian period, Palaeozoic eraCactocrinus multibrachiatus - Mississippian period, Palaeozoic eraScaphites hippocrepia - Cretaceous period, Mesozoic eraNeptunea tabulata - Quarternary period, Cenozoic eraSee the links below for more examples and info.
Strictly speaking these are two differing types of scientists. Petrologists study rocks and paleontologists study fossils. However both these disciplines are covered in the broader training of a geologist.

Narrative structure is about two things: the content of a story and the form used to tell the story. Two common ways to describe these two parts of narrative structure are story and plot.
