Dreadnaught was the name of a British battleship launched in 1906; HMS Dreadnaught. The revolutionary all big gunned (12" caliber) warship was planned prior to 1905, but was not approved for construction, pending the results of the Battle of Tsushima, between the Russian & Japanese pre-dreadnaughts in May 1905 (British naval officers were aboard Japanese battleships during the battle).

After the successful conclusion of the battle on 27 May 1905, the all big gun battleship was validated, and Dreadnaught was approved by Whitehall, and her keel was laid in October of 1905. After HMS Dreadnaught was launched in 1906, all battleships existing prior to 1906 were termed "Pre-Dreadnaughts."

WWI was fought by battlecruisers and dreadnaughts (having been built from 1906 onward).
