Changed the pcv valve. It fixed my p171 code on my 2001 escort. Have to get the PVC valve from the Ford place. They are the only one that carry the right one.
PCV valve is available at AutoZone part # PCV 1001 for 2001 Escort SOHC 2.0L
Change the fuel filter and adjust the valves.
full tuneup, plugs, wires, cap/rotor, air filter, fuel filter etc.
What year? What motor? Pukenstein@aol.com if it has 50,000 miles plus and your unsure of the last tuneup you should replace plugs, wires cap, rotor (unless its distributorless) fuel filter, air filter pcv valve, air box and/ or valve cover breather a haynes/ chilton manual will detail all of this even the O2 sensor (oxygen sensor located on the exhaust manifold) According to my knowledge, you should do a tuneup every 12 months.
your car needs a tuneup, plugs, air filter. should do it
it could be two or three diffent things that's causing the problem (1.time to change fuel filter and add a fuel system treatment and also change the air filter, the fuel filter should be changed every 30,000 miles and air filter every 3,000 miles.(2.major tuneup which consit of changing ign.cap,ign.rotor,ign.wires,sparkplugs,(3.check engine mounts.
Most likely needs a tuneup done. Check the timing and change the normal tuneup part.
A basic tuneup includes changing the spark plugs, wires, fuel filter, air filter, changing the oil/filter, check fluid levels, and perhaps check the engine codes.

There are several standard services provided in most auto clinics. The most common services include inspection for tires, fluids, brakes, and belts. You may request to have your oil changed, tires rotated, or to get a tuneup. You may also decide to have the fuel filter or air filter changed.
try both tuneup and fuel filter change
spark plug wires -sparkplugs-pcv valve-air filter-and gas filter optional
If the fuel filter hasn't been changed yet, do it. The O2 sensor after the cat only monitors the performance of the cat. The O2 sensor before the cat would effect the performance of the engine.
