What can you make yourself out of french knitting?

You can coil it up to make coasters or loop it round to form the petals of a flower. If you add features, you can make little snakes. :) hope this helps! There is a pattern online which uses these loops to make really cute teddy bears (at Lion Brand). You can also make the letters of the alphabet which can be attached to another project. You can make coasters, hot pads, placemats, rugs. There is also a book called Corking (Kids Can Do It) by Judy Ann Sadler which gives pattern ideas. If you're searching for more information, you might find patterns online by using some of the other names this technique is known by - knitting dolly, knitting tower, Knitting Nancy, Bizzy Lizzy, knitting mushroom, knitting spool, peg knitter, knitting noddy or knitting knobby, spool knit.

Can you interchange a knit pattern to a crochet pattern?

Yes, you can create something similar, if you are willing to make gauge swatches and do the resulting calculations. However, there are some characteristics of garments that are intrinsic to the technique used to construct them. Elasticity and drape, for example, will almost always change dramatically when a design made for knitting is crocheted instead. Knitting is generally much more elastic and drapy than crochet.

Why does my stockinette stitch look like a basic stitch?

Are you knitting? If by basic stitch, you mean garter stitch, it is because you are knitting on both sides of the work. It may also mean your working yarn is in the wrong place when you attempt to pearl a stitch. A stockinette stitch is achieved by knitting on one side of the work and pearling on the other. When knitting, the working yarn should be at the back of the work, away from you. When pearling, the working yarn should be pulled between the needle and the work,( closest to you) and then work the stitch the same as a knit stitch. This should fix your problem, but if not, please ask more questions.
