Morarji Desai was the first Indian prime minister to resign from office. He resigned in July of 1979 after serving just slightly over two years of the five year term.
Anthony Eden resigned from the office of Prime Minister on January 9, 1957, after doctors warned him his life was in danger if he continued in high-pressure office. He was succeeded as Prime Minister by Harold Macmillan.
The last British prime minister to die in office was Sir Winston Churchill, who served from 1940 to 1945 and again from 1951 to 1955. However, he did not die while actively in office; the last prime minister who did was Lord Palmerston, who passed away in 1865 while serving as prime minister. Churchill resigned in 1955 and died in 1965, after his political career had ended.
During 2010 Japan had two different prime ministers. Yukio Hatoyama was prime minister at the beginning of the year and held office until the 8th of June 2010 when he resigned. Naoto Kan then took the job and was prime minister for the rest of 2010.
