Canadian physician and Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae wrote it on May 3, 1915, after he witnessed the death of his friend, Lieutenant Alexis Helmer, only 22 years old, the day before.

The second book Gary Paulsen wrote is "The Beet Fields: Memories of a Sixteenth Summer," published in 2000. It is a memoir recounting his experiences working in the beet fields as a teenager.
