Information about Japanese dresses

There are two traditional kinds of Japanese dresses. The first, and more widely known, is called a kimono. It is made of silk and is typically worn with an obi (a belt that goes around the waist and ties in the back) and geita (wooden sandals with a strap between the first and second toes). Though mostly worn by women in today's society, there are also men's kimonos as well, though the two are made in distinctly different styles and patterns. In fact, 'kimono' used to refer to all clothing in general, no matter the style or the clothing nor the gender of the person who wore it. Currently, kimonos are rarely worn by women in Japan, and only on special occasions.

The second kind of Japanese dress is called a 'yukata' and has a more recent history than the kimono. A yukata is similar to a kimono in style and pattern, but is typically less elaborate and is made of cotton instead of silk, which makes it significantly less expensive. Many women have taken to wearing these instead of kimonos, but again, only on certain occasions. The majority of the time, women in Japan wear western clothing styles, including western-style dresses (another type of dress worn in Japan, then, if not deriving from the country itself).
