Insert page number
To insert a page number on the Design tab in Microsoft Word, you can navigate to the "Insert" tab within the Ribbon, click on the "Page Number" drop-down menu, and then select the desired location for the page number (such as top of page or bottom of page). It is simply called "Insert Page Number" and the icon usually resides in the "Header & Footer" section, just like in the "Insert" tab. In the "Design" tab you have more options available, of course, such as performing certain actions only on certain pages (first page only, odd & even pages differently, etc.). If you are talking about background, go to 'page layout' menu and select 'background'. On newer versions it is in the Page Background group in the Design tab on the Ribbon.
