What does the distance have to be between the stove top and the stove hood?

40 - 42 inches. Less than 40 inches you could bang your head on it, if you're tall. More than 42 inches it'll be less effective. Range tops are usually set at 34 - 36 inches so overall height to the hood is 6' 2" to 6' 6". If you are taller than this the range top and hood both will probably need to be raised.

How to Select the Best Range Hood for Your Kitchen?

Whether you are installing a new kitchen or updating an older one, a good quality range hood should be part of your remodeling budget. Range hoods not only perform a functional use but they can be an attractive focal point in your decorating scheme. Why Do You Need a Range Hood? No matter what type of stove you have, when you are cooking there will be smoke, grease and odors from the cooking process. Smoke and grease are not only unpleasant, they can cause damage to your health and environment. Excess smoke and grease can eventually darken paint on the walls and ceiling. Breathing in smoke can cause irritation to the throat and eyes. Accumulated grease can cause kitchen fires as well as clog up the fixtures on the stove or indoor grill. A range hood will remove the smoke, grease and odors leaving only the natural air in the kitchen. Types of Installation Range hoods purify the air in your kitchen in two ways, either by installed ducts or ductless installation. Ductless Installation - The ductless range hood captures the air, purifies it through a filter, and re-circulates it back into the room. The filter in a ductless range hood may be a steel mesh type designed to trap grease. This filter can be removed and cleaned in the dishwasher. Some models have disposable filters that need to be changed on a periodic basis. Other models feature an activated carbon filter to remove odors. The ductless range hood is the least expensive alternative. It requires no exterior ducts, therefore no changes to the wall space. This could be a consideration for a rental unit or apartment. Duct Installed Range Hood - The duct installed type of range hood is the most effective in getting rid of smoke and grease and offers the greatest range of design choices. In terms of price, the duct installed range hood is more expensive. Professional installation is usually required as ducts have to be installed from the wall or ceiling to the exterior wall of the house. Whatever design you choose, a range hood can add function as well as beauty to your kitchen.

How to Replace a Range Hood?

Make sure that you are sure which type of range hood you need before purchasing and installing one. If you are going to be replacing a recirculation hood with a venting hood, there are extra steps involved in the installation, because you need ductwork that vents to the outside of your home or business. Now that you’ve purchased the right type of hood and have gathered all of your tools, let’s get started. This article is going to focus on replacing a range hood, as opposed to installing a range hood above your stove for the first time. As always, be sure to refer to the manufacturer’s instructions or user manual that came with the new range hood. First, turn off the power at the electrical panel, then remove the existing range hood by unscrewing all the attached points. To protect your stove while you’re installing the new range hood, you might want to cover it with the cardboard from range hood’s box. Remove the metal electrical cover to expose the wiring. Remove the knock- out plate on the new hood that is for the electrical wires to pass through. Thread the wire-tensioner through the hole backwards, so that the range hood will fit flush against the wall. Remove the cover plate, and affix the duct adapter to the back of the new hood (assuming the range hood has an outside duct). At this point, you will slide the wire through the tensioner, but don’t tighten it until you place the new range hood into place, as you slide the duct adapter into the exhaust duct. Now, tighten the wires and screws as you position the new range hood into place, making sure that the mounting ledge is flush with the cabinets. Finally, connect the power cable from the range hood to the power source, tighten any remaining screws, and replace the junction box cover. The final, small steps are simply to insert the filter and light bulb and their covers, and turn the power back on. Before you call it a day, test the operation of the fan, light and vent, if applicable.
