They do have Alternative Hip-Hop/Punk rhythm sections in there songs, but they are more Rap Rock or Rap Metal.
to keep in time, the bass line of a jazz song keeps the band in time, and the drummer helps the bass player do that.
The rhythm is Larry Graham gettin' funky on the base, Sly's sister on the horn ( as well as others), guitar and keyboard. Pretty much the entire band is the rhythm section on all their tunes
