When did it start happening.....i.e. roughly what date? My D915GAV is doing the same thing. Spent lots of time with Microsoft and posted the question on XP_help_and_support newsgroup but no answers yet.

You cannot download any type of vertex shader version. It is built in your Mother Board of your computer.
A sound driver can be installed in the Compaq Presario C700 either with the software that came with the sound board, or by direct download. Through the control panel and hardware, go to sound and right click. This will provide an option to update or download the driver.

There is no such thing as a "motherboard driver." Motherboards are composed of several components, each of which needs its own driver. The drivers needed for the components can usually be downloaded from the manufacturer's site.
