Covalent compounds are formed when one or more electrons are shared between atoms(nonmetal-nonmetal). Covalent compounds are generally more soluble in organic solvents than in water, have a low melting point and do not conduct electricity well in water.

Ionic compounds are formed when one or more electron are transferred from one atom to another. They stick together like magnets attract to each other. Ionic bonds form between any two ions(metals-nonmetals) of opposite charges.

The covalent bond is the true chemical bond that results from the true sharing of a pair of electrons. Ionic bonding is much weaker as it depends only upon the electrostatic attractions between polar entities.

Is there a clear difference between a very polar covalent bond and an ionic bond explain?

Electronegativity differences of <0.5 indicates a nonpolar covalent bond. Electronegativity differences between 0.5 and 1.6 indicate a polar covalent bond. Electronegativity differences >2.0 indicates an ionic bond. For electronegativity differences between 1.6 and 2.0, if the bond involves a metal, it is considered to be ionic. If the bond is between two nonmetals, the bond is considered to be polar covalent. Refer to the related link below for more information.

What large differences in electronegativity result in bonding between atoms?

If this difference is under 2 the bond is covalent; if the difference is over 2 the bond is ionic.

What bonds in calcium hydroxide CaOH2 are ionic and which are covalent?

The bonds between calcium and hydroxide in calcium hydroxide are ionic, and the bonds between oxygen and hydrogen are covalent.

Is mg2 ionic or covalent?

Ionic, When trying to figure out the type of bond just use this simple rule. If the atoms are two nonmetals then the bond is covalent. If one of the atoms is nonmetal and the other is a metal then the bond will be ionic. This is due to differences in electronegativity.

What is the difference between an ionic bond covalent bond and hydrogen bond?

ionic bond: between a metal and a nonmetal Covalent bond: between 2 non metals USUALLY and i don't know about hydrogen bonds...
