When light, which is made up of different colours (generally refered as 7 colours) falls on an object, the object absorbs different wavelengths (colours) and reflect particular wavelength (colour) so we see the colour of respective wavelength.

In case of sky, the light from sun when enters to our earth's atmosphere most of longer wavelengths passes directly to us. The shorter wavelength (blue colour) scatters and disperses in gas molecules of atmosphere, so sky seems blue. Actually it is black.

Same phenomena is responsible for water to appear blue. The colour is more sharpen in lakes and oceans due to reflection of blue sky.

Different colours of eye are also controlled by same effect.
