Here's a European perspective - less than 30 mpg: very poor 30 - 40mpg: ok 40 - 50mpg: good 50 - 60 mpg: very good 60+: feel free to show off 50 - 60mpg is easy to come by if you get a specially prepared "eco" version of a car. Otherwise most cars are between 40 and 50 mpg.
