It varies from airline to airline, but the current standard allows passengers 1 carry on bag and 1 personal item (handbag, PC, etc.) free of charge. Checked luggage is usually $25 per bag...that's $25 EACH WAY, so if you're checking 2 bags, it will cost you $100 for the round trip. Southwest Airlines is one of the few airlines that still allows you to check your luggage free of charge, although it's not unlimited...I'm not sure how many pieces you can check for free or what the fee for excess luggage is.

I flew from the U.S. to Italy last week. The weight limit on my luggage was 50 pounds each suitcase. If over that amount, you would be charged extra. I suggest you go to your airline website for size and weight restrictions.
