A Word or WordPefect document probably would be fine, especially if it does not include photographs. If you're referring to a scanned file, you can pretty much expect that a black and white scanned PDF is going to be about 50K per page, while a color PDF is about 500K per page.
The higher the resolution of the scan, the larger the image. A document scanned at 300 dots per inch will be twice the size of a document scanned at 200 DPI.
