In 1871, Germany fought a war with France and won, and part of the settlement was that Alsace and Lorraine would be given to Germany and called "Alsace-Lorraine". France was angry about it and wanted "revanche"- revenge. As part of the settlement of World War I, Alsace-Lorraine was given back to France.
