(sigh) Do not listen to that last answer. Altair lost his ring finger because it showed that he as the user was committed enough to the blade, it also needed to be removed because that's where the blade comes out of and the ring finger would be in the way. That's why in Assassins Creed 2 when Ezio first gets his hidden blade Leonardo da vinci jokingly tells him to put out his ring finger in order to cut it off. Ezio on the other hand does not need to get his finger cut off because over the years the hidden blade has been modified. It also shows he is so dedicated to the cause he will not fall in love and get married. As there is now no ring finger to put the ring on.

∙ 14y agoYes. He had to have his ring finger removed, so that the blade does not cut him when it extends. A removed finger is also the mark of the assassin's guild, allowing them to identify each other.

∙ 12y agoNo. Though the original schematics on the hidden blade called for the removal of the middle finger (to ensure the dedication and loyalty of the user), Leonardo da Vinci changed the design so he could keep his finger.
