Apollo was know as god of many things, but not the sky. He was however the god of light, and therefore of the sun too. Apollo was also the god of music, prophecy, colonization, medicine, Archery, poetry, dance, intellectual inquiry, the carer of herds and flocks, and of plague. Zeus was known as the weather god and thus god of the sky.

Apollo 13 was named after the Greek god Apollo as part of NASA's tradition to use the name "Apollo" for its manned space missions. The Apollo program was named after the god of the sun, Apollo, who drove his chariot of fire across the sky each day. The association with the sun was fitting for a space program aiming to reach the moon.
I'm pretty sure he didn't. It was Helios, the sun god, who did that. You might have heard Apollo did because since Apollo is a god of light people can mistake him for the sun god when really he is more a god of spiritual light, not the actual light of the sun.
He was the god of the sun. He rode his golden chariot through the sky every day to give the world light.
