Bulgaria had to reorganize its government after the collapse of communism in 1991. Well actually, Bulgaria started working towards democracy when the Bulgarian Communist Party abdicated in 1989. Eastern Europeans were long wanting democracy as the vast majority opposed communism. Eastern Europe also feared Western interference with communism, so they switched to democracies to please the West. Bulgaria has been a republic since 1989.
Communist Party of Bulgaria was created in 1996.
