Ok: never done something like this before...I'm no expert but it seems like a trick question to me: every study I've ever seen on capitol punishment shows that it's more expensive--MUCH more expensive to go w/killing folks than keeping them if necessary out of our society for the rest of their lives...for that matter i also understand that murder is the least repeated of all crimes so even that one would surmise is unnecessary in most cases.

//The above answer is correct. Most people find it surprising to learn that it is cheaper to keep a prisoner for his natural life than to execute them. But there is a very good reason why this is so. With every death penalty case comes a number of appeals that must be exhausted before a DOE (date of exection) can be assigned to an inmate. These appeals are in place to make sure that everybody was treated justly and fairly within the judicial system. Mistakes are made in every case, some with dire consequences. All of the previous court preceedings are sent to a higher court to examine and decide if the prisoner's trial did not violate his rights, ect. Appeals cost money and jam up already jammed court calendars. Years go by and attorney's fees and court costs begin to add up. It is now under discussion about eliminating at least some of those mandatory appeals to speed up the process and save taxpayers some money. Whether this will happen is unknown at this time.//

Is jail for life more effective than capital punishment?

Life in prison is not necessarily more effective than capital punishment. A murderer who is dead can never kill again. A person who is serving life in prison can still kill inmates and prison guards, although the chances of that are really small. Life in prison is more effective in the way that it costs less money to keep someone in jail than it does to have them executed. A person who is serving life in prison and later found out to be innocent can be freed and not be in prison anymore.
