I deleted the previous answer which said "the Ohio River." While the Ohio River serves as a natural border between southern Ohio and northern West Virginia and Kentucky, it does not run through Ohio and is nowhere near Columbus (located in the middle of the state). The Olentangy and Scioto Rivers run through Columbus, Ohio. The Olentangy runs north to south, through the Ohio State University Campus. Just west of the Olentangy, the Scioto runs nortwest to south through downtown Columbus.

Illinois is north of the Ohio River.
Columbus, the capital city in the U.S. state of Ohio, is located on the Scioto and Olentangy rivers. Ohio has had three capital cities: Chillicothe, Zanesville, and Columbus. Chillicothe, Zanesville, and Columbus are not on the Ohio River. Cincinnati, a major city in Ohio, is on the Ohio River. However, Cincinnati never was the capital city in Ohio.
Columbus Ohio is closer to the North Pole than it is to the South Pole.

Yes, Detroit is located north of the Ohio River. The Ohio River flows primarily along the southern border of Ohio, while Detroit is situated in southeastern Michigan, farther north. Therefore, Detroit is geographically positioned to the north of the Ohio River.
