China is still viewed to be a patriarchal society as men are viewed to be more influential than woman. Men in modern China have more power within both community as well as the domestic goverment and political decisions.

Due to the one child policy introduced in 1978, families who need their children to work prefer to have a male child. This is due to the fact that they view men to be more productive in manual labour, therefore more employable resulting in more income cash flows. At present China has 117. 7 baby boys per 100 girls, demonstrating the negative consequence of the one child policy .

While their public lives are still rather in line with the patriarchal image, women are very much in charge when it comes to the household.
