Actually the subject of Edward & Bella's sexual experience is left to no uncertain terms. While Edward & Bella are laying in her bed one evening he asks her if she had had any serious boyfriends in Phoenix. She says that she didn't. She felt that there was nothing special about herself. Edward told her she should have heard all the THOUGHTS going on in the heads of the boys in Forks H.S. on her first day.
Then Edward tells Bella that Esme had always worried if Carlisle had 'changed' Edward before he'd finished going through puberty because he never showed any real interest in any particular girl. That's one reason that Alice and Esme and the vampire guys are as supportive of Edward's feelings for Bella (even though she's HUMAN!). They have felt bad for him..always being alone...because they are so happily mated.
After Edward asks Bella about her romantic relationships (or lack thereof)...and she says, like him, she has had almost NO experience...he says 'that's another thing we have in common, then'...meaning that they are both virgins.
(If I can find the chapter/page where this conversation is located I'll come back and add it later. I'm nearly positive it was in Twilight...but MIGHT be in Midnight Sun...I'll try to check and get back with the info.)
