Effexor is an SNRI (serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor). It's main use is to treat depression and anxiety, but it has been used off-label to prevent migraine headaches. So has Cymbalta, another SNRI.

When you are taking Effexor be sure to be careful when taking triptan medications such as Imitrex, as they both work with serotonin and in rare cases can cause a serious and sometimes life-threatening reaction. Make sure your doctor knows all the medications you take for your migraines.
