The most common extinguisher is an 'ABC' extinguisher, which contains a dry chemical powder which suppresses the fire, and disrupts the fire tetrahedron, which is necessary for any fire to exist (Fuel, Oxygen, Heat, Chemical Chain Reaction).
Class C(Electical fire) extinguishers often contain Carbon Dioxide(CO2), which is a gas. CO2 is used due it's non-conductive nature, and ability to remove oxygen from the fire tetrahedron.
Some fire systems employ the use of gases such as Halon, which is used in highly sensitive areas, such as computer server rooms, or areas where intricate equipment is used which would be damaged with the use of sprinkler systems or chemical fire suppressants.
