No. Freemasonry is a fraternity that evolved out of the stonemasons incorporations of Scotland and the guilds of England. The stated purposes of the fraternity are "Brotherly Love, Charity and Truth."

Those who oppose Freemasonry have stated that it is "controversial," but usually that controversy only exists in the minds of the paranoid. Its opponents also say that it is riddled with pagan signs, rituals and ideas, and that the very nature of its secrecy is rather unsavoury. However, every college fraternity and sorority, as well as other fraternal organizations from the Odd Fellows to the Elks Club and the Moose Lodge, all have similar ceremonies, signs and symbols.

The vast majority of Masons in English-speaking countries are either Christian or Jewish, and there is nothing unwholesome about fraternalism and self-improvement.

Its supporters will say that Freemasonry is not a religion, even those branches of it which require members to belong to a particular religion (in practice, the only religion ever required is Christianity). Its purpose is social, fraternal and benevolent. It also seeks to make people better people according to standards of goodness everyone accepts. Such a purpose cannot be evil.

Whether secrecy is unsavoury is dubious. Is there something unsavoury about not telling your kids what you are giving them for their birthday until their birthday comes? Or about being discreet about something that will cause you to be persecuted?

Freemasonry is not evil, unless you define "evil" in a somewhat odd manner. The tenants of Freemasonry are Brotherly Love, Relief and Truth, and its basic principles are Faith, Hope and Charity. It teaches morality and seeks to "make good men better." Unfortunately, because Freemasonry has kept its rituals and tokens of recognition secret (or tired to) some people have taken exception to the fraternity and made assumptions about what they "are really up to."

Sadly, some people fear what they do not understand, and may seek a scapegoat for their fears. All too often this has resulted in unjustly condemning whole races of people, as well as various religions or organizations. Because of this, many false stories have been told about Freemasonry. Many of them are still based on a great hoax perpetrated in the late 1900's by a man who called himself Leo Taxil. He publicly confessed to the lies, but they persist to this day. As Rev. Charles Spurgeon said in 1855, "A lie will go round the world while truth is pulling its boots on."
