The superstition of Friday the 13th being unlucky originates with the Poor Knights of Christ and the Temple of Solomon known more commonly as the Knight Templar.
They were established in the time of the Crusades, to help and protect pilgrams to the Holy land. In the 12th century they assumed a more military role at the direction of the Papicy and have been connected in legend with the Grail Quest.
In September of 1305 the French King Phillip IV set an elaborate plot to destroy the Templars by sending out sealed orders to troops throughout Christendom, which where to be opened on the 13th day (a Friday). The troops fell upon the Knights and arrested or killed virtually all of them. The charges included Heresy and sodomy and the sentences were death, frequently by torture and or burning at the stake. The wealth of the religious order reverted to the crown.
