Development of the game was announced in 2003 and in August of 2004 it was released in China. Because of copyright issues the game was shut down after a hundred copies were sold. The game remained popular and copies were sold for sometimes $100+ USD on auction sites and was in high demand for downloads on the Internet. The game follows the recently promoted Colonel Edward Elric as his peaceful life in Central City is interrupted by the body he made for Alphonse Elric beginning to deconstruct. There are four endings, depending on what choices are made day to day. Unless the player winds up with the "Tea Alchemist" ending, which is a joke ending, there really is not a happy ending to Bluebird's Illusion. Originally the game was available only in Chinese, but as it became more popular fans made unofficial versions in languages like Japanese and Portuguese. A group called Bluebird's Illusion: Rebuild is currently working to localize the game and plans to release an English patch sometime in 2012.
