This happened in 1869. $1 bills were the first to carry a portrait of George Washington, but it was different from the one on current bills. Subsequent designs featured other individuals (including his wife Martha) until 1918, when his picture once again appeared on the denomination. The current portrait is derived from a painting by Gilbert Stuart; it was first used on the 1923 series of $1 silver certificates and has been on all $1 bills issued since that date.
All U.S. currency is printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing in either Washington, DC or Fort Worth, Texas. Fort Worth bills have a small FW on them
