She is represented by a governor-general, but his duties are primarily ceremonial. The Parliament of Canada, headed by the Prime Minister of Canada, is completely independent of the UK parliament, headed by the Prime Minister of the UK.

There is no British Empire because it hasn't existed for decades. It was replaced with the British Commonwealth (or Commonwealth of Nations). Canada is a member of the Commonwealth.
