The only way you can pass on a cold sore is by coming in direct contact with it, so that means it has to be active. But you can pass it on if you are eating with a spoon (ice cream, cereal, etc...) when your cold sore is active and you share it with your son. Just be careful to keep a lookout incase you do get an outbreak.
