They had celebrated the harvest, put away animals for the winter, and payed honor to their harvest gods. It was also a popular time to play tricks on each other. The Catholic church later came in and Christianized the event by making it traditional for people to go door to door asking for cakes in exchange for prayers for the dead. This is where much of the death association started. It is a totally man made holiday with influences from several cultures. The only real meaning to it is what you make of it. In modern times, most people don't really think of it as anymore than a time to have fun with spooky things, wear costumes, and gather candy. If you ask most kids what Halloween is, that is the answer you will get... you dress up and get candy. It has lost pretty much any previous meaning in popular culture.
