Hong Kong is referred to as a 'Special Administrative Region'. This term is also applied to Hong Kong's neighbor, Macau. 'Special Administrative Region's' or 'SAR' as they are more commonly referred to, are regions that, although geographically connected to the People's Republic of China, maintain a political autonomy from China. In this sense, it is not a nation. The PRC provides military defense to these regions and also handles diplomatic affairs.
