Isaiah was a prophet who lived during the 8th-century B.C. in the Kingdom of Judah before it fell to the Babylonians. Isaiah is credited as the author of the book by the same name in The Bible and often quoted in the New Testament.

In the biblical account found in Isaiah 6, the prophet Isaiah sees a vision of the Lord seated on a throne, surrounded by seraphim. One of the seraphim takes a burning coal from the altar and touches Isaiah's lips with it, declaring that his guilt is taken away and his sin is atoned for.
