Internet censorship is used for a variety of purposes. In many jurisdictions, milder forms of censorship are used to prevent minors from accessing materials the community deems inappropriate for youths. Some businesses use internet censorship to prevent losses in productivity from unrelated web browsing by workers. Finally, some repressive governments use internet censorship to prevent their citizens from organizing dissent or learning about conditions in other societies that are more prosperous or that allow more freedom.
Censorship is the act of examining media (such as books, newspapers, the Internet, TV, etc) and removing any unacceptable parts such as anti-government or political messages.
Many people remember the days when the internet young and nothing was censored. There are both pros and cons of internet censorship. Censorship can serve a positive purpose if it restricts offensive, pornographic and violent materials that could be easily viewed by sensitive people or children. The cons are an invasion of privacy, limitations on free speech and freedom of the press. Also, there is always a chance that censorship might be used as a tool of propaganda by governments who have something to hide.
